Sore & grumpy

Ξ February 28th, 2005 | → Comments Off | ∇ General |

I had a less than stellar workout tonight. Not only did I accidentally hurt someone, but I got hurt too. My right quad has a bruise the size of an apple, and walking is incredibly awkward. Not great timing. My confidence lately with my workouts has been less than fantastic. I’ve been avoiding certain aspects of training because I almost always get injured doing them. I’ve gotten to the point where I am pondering doing something else because of the consistent nature of my injuries. I’m tired of being sore all the time. At the same time I’ve been doing this for years, and it has been a core part of my identity, and to stop doing it would really just be wierd. But the limbo space I’m in hasn’t been as constructive for my motivation or for developing my skills.

I am trying to think of different ways to regain my motiovation, and to train hard without injury. That may mean taking a short break while I rehab my hamstring and work on core stability. I know I just really need to get my focus back.

Heck, any focus at all would be an improvement.

I think…

Ξ February 24th, 2005 | → Comments Off | ∇ General |

I’ve got the Journal about as good as I can get it. It’s amazing what cutting and pasting bits of html into templates can accomplish. I’ve deleted my old archive page and put a drop down menu for my archives in the side bar. The only think left to do is change the about me page so that it’s the same format as the rest of my journal.

I’m feeling quite accomplished this week. I’m so happy with the content we’ve made and all the work I’ve done switching to the new server. Tomorrow I take a break from the site and go on a trip to Richmond to pick up a spare battery for the laptop. That’ll take a chunk of time out of my day. In the evening I’ll be heading over to Tanuki’s place for the night.

Here is one of the photos I took the other night during the shaving shoot. I really like how it turned out.

I shot the photos using two 750W lights with umbrellas, and the camera was set at 400ISO. The shutter speed was set at 1/30. I am thinking I may set the camera speed at 200ISO next time, and see how that changes the photos. I’m thinking 200ISO might be a bit crisper.

I just upgraded my journal, and lost all of my formatting. Unfortunately since I know almost nothing about css, which this build seems to entirely rely on, it is going to take me a while to get my journal looking the way it was.

Photo Shoot

Ξ February 22nd, 2005 | → Comments Off | ∇ General |

The photo shoot went awesome today. The lighting we rented worked out really well and the photos turned out really good. We set up at 3:30 and started shooting at 4pm, and shot almost straight through until 7pm. We got 1.5 hours or raw video and 700+ raw photos. I definitely think we will purchase some lighting soon. I really liked the 750W lowell lights and the umbrella setup. The light was nice and even over the photo area using two lights. The video and the photos looked great under that lighting. Eventually I will purchase a similiar set to the one we used today, but I’ll wait until we can find a good set used or prices come down a little.

We will be shooting some more photos tomorrow before we take the lights back. We figure we will get as much use out of them as we can while we have them. It will be neat to see how they work in out home,

I’m pooped. The last few weeks have been really busy. I’ve enjoyed having a lot on the go, but I could do without having to wake up at 7:30am some mornings. I am a real night owl so mornings are a challenge for me. I know, it’s a rough life. I have one of the most fun and entertaining jobs around, I work from home, I see sexy naked people on a regular basis, and I can sleep in. Woohoo!

Progress

Ξ February 22nd, 2005 | → Comments Off | ∇ General, Porn Notes |

We’re making progress.

The DNS changeover started about 9:30pm PST and I’ve been going through the sites on the new server making sure everything works. Thus far 99.5% is working perfectly. Wednesday I will need to repair some forums and fix the news pages for a few sites. Other than that the switchover has been great. The members areas work great, and video streams and clips all work. T’is good.

Tomorrow is the big photo shoot day. We’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money to get ready for this shoot (and future shoots). New used laptop, light rental, camera battery and a CF card. As always, when we spend any money, I cross my fingers and hope it pays off in the long term. The laptop has been brilliant. I love it just from a personal standpoint. Especially watching B5 DVD’s in bed with my headphones on. That is sweet. The main benefit will be the ability to download images off of the camera onto the laptop, hence clearing the flash cards for more photos. T’is a good thing. With a 3-4 hour battery life we can go into some pretty remote locations and shoot to our heart’s content. We’ll poop out before the camera and laptop does.

In stomach notes. I’m not feeling as invulnerable as I usually do. Like many people I really believed I would never have a serious health problem in my life. I’ve blown both my knees out, broken bones, hurt my back, torn muscles, and hurt myself in a variety of ways - but they all healed.

I can’t do anything to fix Crohn’s disease if that is indeed what I have. I’m stuck with it. And if I am confirmed as having it I will likely have to take medication for the rest of my life to manage the inflammation of the small bowel and intestines. If I have Crohn’s and I don’t care for myself properly I could end up having to have surgery which could mean cutting parts of my intestines out. It doesn’t heal. It is only managed.

I really don’t like that. I’m still glad it wasn’t a tumor. Well… mostly. A tumor could have been cut out with a good chance of complete recovery. Ah well. I’ll deal, whatever happens.

On another note, I bought a poker kit from the store the other day. I have wanted to learn to play poker for a while and thought it would be a good purchase. All I need now are people to play with.

Work

Ξ February 20th, 2005 | → Comments Off | ∇ General |

Busy

I’ve been crazy busy lately. The server switchover is under way. I’ve transferred all the files and am waiting for the name server/DNS information to propagate. I am hoping that it will get done tomorrow so that I can troubleshoot and fix anything that’s broken.

We also have a lady from the uk in town to do a head shave on Tuesday, so we’ve been spending time with her to get to know her and see what kind of photo shoot she’s most into. When someone flies so far just to have shave done with us, we want to make sure it’s an amazing experience for them.

I’ve also been in and out of the doctor’s office over the last few weeks. I’ve had blood tests, flouroscopies, stomach x-rays, and had to drink entirely too much barium milkshakes. It looks like I have Crohn’s disease, which is an inflammatory bowel disease that can get quite serious of left untreated. Other than being incredibly nauseous all the time, strange bodily emissions, and a sore back, I feel fine. Well, not really. The nausea really makes my life a challenge. Especially when I sit in front of a screen for a good part of the day and I have a lot of work to do. I have a GI specialist’s appointment on March 9th to get a second opinion and further tests, if neccessary. I’m not looking forward to the next tests they usually do. I don’t need any flexible cameras stuck up my arse.

At least I know now why I’ve been having certain health issues over the last few years. It means I have to be careful what I eat, because certain foods tend to aggravate the inflammation. No nuts, no popcorn (no big loss), less caffeine, less processed sugar, and no dairy. Yay, most of my favorite food I am not supposed to eat. Fark.

Anyways. I’ve been enjoying my new laptop. I got a wireless card for it the other day and have been taking advantage of being able to use the internet and work from various locations. I am surprised at how many people in my building don’t use WEP on their wireless routers. When I check for wireless stations I get 6-8 of them listed that are all unencrypted. I wonder if people know that they are giving people easy access to any shared folders they have and a piggyback on their internet connection. I’ve got the highest level of encryption running on my router. I don’t want anyone getting access to my files or using my internet access.

Anyhoo. Back to work.

The craziness starts tomorrow

Ξ February 14th, 2005 | → Comments Off | ∇ General |

Tomorrow is the start of a very busy 2 weeks for me. The new server gets delivered tomorrow, so I’ll be starting to set it up, harden the server, and upload all the websites. I have a food delivery in the mid afternoon and a doctors appointment in the late afternoon. I’ve got M/W/F evenings completely booked up. Wednesday morning I get my lovely barium x-ray done. Thursday afternoon I get my teeth cleaned, and then on Saturday we meet a lady from the UK that has come into town for a head shave for our website and we’ll spend the next 3 days getting ready to do the shoot on the 22nd. Between other activities I will be working on the new server.

I bought an 80 gig HD for my desktop today. I was running out of space on my original HD so I hadn’t been able to transfer recent video to disk to edit. 80 gigs should do just fine. I also bought myself a used laptop. It will be arriving on Thursday afternoon. It’s a p3 1.3Ghz, w/ 512MB RAM, a 30 gig HD, and a DVD/CDRW. It will be invaluable for our future plans, which include many more on-location photo shoots and travelling. It’s very exciting!

I’m spending tonight backing up the old server, and relaxing. Fairly soon I’ll be taking the puppies for a walk and I’ll come abck and watch some B5 on DVD, sip on some tasty water, and cuddle said puppies.

Bleh, not looking forward to backing up sql databases.

intelligence???

Your Dominant Intelligence is Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

You are naturally athletic and coordinated, good at making your mind and body work together.
Sports are fun and easy for you, especially those requiring good hand - eye coordination.
There’s also a good chance you’re a great dancer, or good at expressing yourself through body language.
You learn best by doing, and you feel like you’ve always got to be moving (even if it’s just your hands).

You would make a good athlete, physical education teaches, dancer, actor, firefighter, or artisan.

What Kind of Intelligence Do You Have?

bleh to lighting

Ξ February 11th, 2005 | → Comments Off | ∇ General |

So it turns out getting proper lighting may not be possible yet. The sets I have seen that are inexpensive are for flash photography, and since I’m looking for a continuous light setup my costs immediately go up. I am pondering getting the bare minumum, a stand, hex convertible umbrella, 700W light source, and 700W bulb. And thats still 400 bucks. The set that was recommended to me was a grand. Ptttht. Not. And I would still want a tripod on top of that, another 100-150 bucks.

I have 10 days to decide still. I’ll look for used goods and also check out other lighting options such as floor/stand mounted halogens etc.

A rather discouraging day all in all.

—-edit—-

We’ve decided to rent the same light set that was recommended to us so we can test it out to make sure it is going to work for us. To rent for a day is only $40 for two lights and a carry case, and it will give us the opportunity to try it out and make sure it’s what we need. It seems like a smart thing to do before investing a grand in equipment.

Not feeling quite as discouraged.

Quote

It seems quite unlikely that all the instances of intense suffering occurring daily in our world are intimately related to the occurrence of a greater good or the prevention of evils at least as bad; and even more unlikely, should they somehow all be so related, that an omnipotent, omniscient being could not have achieved at least some of those goods (or prevented some of those evils) without permitting the instances of intense suffering that are supposedly related to them. In the light of our experience and knowledge of the variety and scale of human and animal suffering in our world, the idea that none of this suffering could have been prevented by an omnipotent being without thereby losing a greater good or permitting an evil at least as bad seems an extraordinarily absurd idea, quite beyond our belief.
