ethical question

Ξ September 30th, 2005 | → 0 Comments | ∇ General |

Taken from craigslist. I took a few ethics courses and they had tonnes of problems similar to this that we had to work through. I thought this one was quite interesting.

An ethical question…what would you honestly choose??

This test only has one question, but it’s a very important one. Giving
an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. The test
features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you will
have to make a decision.

Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous.

Please scroll down slowly and give due consideration to each line.

THE SITUATION:

You are in New Orleans. There is chaos all around you caused by a
hurricane with severe flooding. This is a flood of biblical
proportions. You are a photo journalist working for a major newspaper,
and you’re caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is
nearly hopeless. You’re trying to shoot career-making photos. There are
houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the
water. Nature is unleashing all of its destructive fury.

THE TEST:

Suddenly you see a man in the water. He is fighting for his life,
trying not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer. Somehow
the man looks familiar. You suddenly realize who it is. It’s the
President, George W. Bush. At the same time you notice the raging waters
are about to take him under forever. You have two options: you can save
the life of the President, or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer
Prize-winning photo, documenting the death of one of the world’s most
famous men.

THE QUESTION:

Here’s the question, and please give an honest answer…….

Would you select high-contrast color film, or would you go with the
classic simplicity of black and white?

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the President Bush his daily briefing.

He concludes by saying: “Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed.”

“OH NO!” the President exclaims. “That’s terrible!”

His staff sit stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits with his head in his hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, “How many is a brazillion?”

Decisions

We have decided to raise some of our prices starting November 1, 2005. Effective Nov 1, 2005, 7 day trial memberships will be $8.95USD, Monthly rebills $15.95USD, and Quarterly rebills will be $35.95. The rest of the prices will be staying the same.

With the US dollar falling(we bill in US currency since it’s a global standard that most every country knows) it means we take in proportionately less. Unfortunately, our expenses stay the same which means we need to make up the difference by increasing prices. The price increase doesn’t mean we’ll be getting anything extra for ourselves, it just means we’ll be able to continue to break even on the site costs. This is our first price raise in a long while, so I’d say we’re doing really well. It’s a minimal increase of $1 for 7 day trials, monthly, and quarterly rebills. For the quantity and quality of our content we are still under priced compared to other similar quality sites.

I’ve given our members a months notice, and posted notices in most of our join pages of the increase as well. That will give people a chance to decide if they wish to stick around or not. It’s only fair.

oh lucky me

So… I got a call at 8:15am from the orthopedic surgeon’s office saying the Dr was called out on an emergency and wouldn’t be in the office today. And I wasn’t given a reschedule date either. So I slept until 10am instead. As Bill the Cat would say, “Pttthhhhhhhttt!!!”.

I was watching the news the other day and saw a story about a dolphin than had been swept 3 miles inland during hurrcane katrina and was straned in a pool of water 4 feet deep and surrounded by grass it couldn’t swim through. One of the news guys tried to help it out but it kept getting tangled in the grass. They eventually called the navy, I think it was, and they air lifted the dolphin to safety. Funny… of all the stories I’ve heard about the disaster, that story touched me really deeply.

I’ve been sleeping more than usual lately. I’ve been feeling about as energetic as a carp in winter. It’s been really challenging to get motivated to do anything. I do things anyways, because they need to be done, but it feels like I’m pulling my own teeth in the process. I’m having trouble concentrating, reading is challenging, I’m agitated, my sleep pattern has changed, I have no sex drive, and I’m sad a good portion of the time. Most of the time I just want to hunker down and be alone. I’ve got classical symptoms of depression going on. It could be from a number of things. The season changing to fall is always a good time for me. So it’s odd timing. Hopefully it’ll pass sooner than later.

I wish I had 10k to spend on home renovations. I spend a good portion of the day thinking about things I’d like to do in the loft. New floors, cabinets, kitchen, light fixtures, ez chair, stainless steel appliances, etc etc. It’s a fall/winter thing. Nesting. I like to nest. Comfy is good.

Some good news today. My left ankle looks completely normal on the MRI results. I also got an appointment with an ankle surgeon for this upcoming Thursday. I feel a bit better now. I was worried I would be stuck waiting for months on end. The encouraging part for me is that I won’t have to rehab two ankles; I’ll only have to deal with the right ankle after surgery. On Thursday I will know the how, what and when of surgery. This is good.

Back in the Saddle

We went to Cirque De Sade, a new fetsh night, last night. It was pretty cool. It was nice to have a dance floor and a sizeable play space under the same roof. I whacked the little girl somewhat harder and more viciously than usual in the play area. I had very much fun. There is something very satifsying about smaking someone until they curl up, happily, into a fetal position.

I’m heading back to the gym tomorrow. I took some time off to get stuff around the house sorted out and have some down time. I’m looking forward to it. I am trying to decide how my exercise program is going to look. I had been doing 1.5 hours of weights and .5 hour of swimming 5 days a week, but I wasn’t getting the full results I wanted. I might just have to be more patient, add a bit more cardio, and adjust my diet accordingly again. The last week and a half I’ve been eating lots of overly tasty, high cal/low nutrition, food. We shall see.

I still have 3 more weeks until I see the sports med Dr about my MRI results for my left ankle. I am hoping my family Dr. will have the results earlier than that. Regardless, I still have to get in to see an ankle surgeon and that seems, at this point, to be a major hurdle. The wait time is very frustrating.

If I’m going to get up at 9am to go to the gym, I’d better head to bed.

I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately, and I’ve come up with some reasons why I continue to cycle in and out of funkage.

I’m lonely and understimulated.

I need to get my ankles operated on so I can get back to being stimulated. I need more mental and physical stimulation, period.

I also need to get in touch with my friend, A. I haven’t seen her in over 3 months and I miss her. I think my lack of social contact with friends is getting me down.

On the plus side, the plan for tomorrow is for the marmot, katt, & I to go to Cirque de Sade tomorrow night. That should be fun. It will be nice to see the marmot and hug and smooch ehr and call her a pirate marmot. arrrrr.

Scotch

Ξ September 22nd, 2005 | → 0 Comments | ∇ General |

It’s the 15 year old Glen Garoich that I bought. According to the tasting notes, it’s got a medium body with hints of lanvendar and oak with a syrupy sweetness. The finish is supposed to be long, melow, and very sumptuous.

It’s got nothing on Glen Dronach, but it is a very good scotch.

I was a busy Wolfe today. Not only did I clean the loft, I sold my old desk. I also brought an art frame that had broken to get fixed.

We decided on the kind of floor we want in our condo. We decided to go with a sand hickory laminate. It is a nice dark colour that will go really well in our place. Now that the loft has been cleaned up and space has beenc reated by removing my old desk, it will be very simple to install the flooring myself. I’ll need to bring the bed downstairs, but i should be able to leave everything else up here, since the majority of stuff is off the floor on shelving anyways, aside from the computer desk, which has wheels.

We’ll do the loft first because it will be cheaper, and easier for me to do on my own. Aside from making our place look 100 times better, it’ll add a lot to the resale value. Woohoo! We have so many thigns we want to do in our place. The floors are the priority though. After that we want to put in enclosed clothing storage upstairs. That means either going to IKEA and designing something from their armoise section, or having somebody like california closets come in and design something to suit. It will depend entirely on cost. Of course it’s all one step at a time. We have had to save up for a long while just to be able to do the loft flooring. After that there’s still downstairs to do, and that will take a while to manage. Patience. Bit by bit and it’ll get done.

We’ll be here for another few years; we’ve already been here almost 8 years. It’s worth ot for us to invest in our home both for our own comfort and for resale value.

Fall is here!

Ξ September 22nd, 2005 | → 0 Comments | ∇ General |

I love fall. The leaves are starting to turn colour and it’s getting windy and blustery. It’s the most beautiful time of the year!

I was thinking of the things I love about particular seasons the other day. Tellingly, the first things I thought of was that I love summer because I can take cold showers, and I love fall because I can start to take hot showers. Spring and Fall are my favourite seasons. They are both seasons of change and the weather is perfect for me. I have lots of pleasant memories of ffall from when Katt and I lived in Victoria in the early 90’s. Victoria is amazing in fall; the wind blows, the ocean smells wonderful, there are trees everywhere. It’s lovely.

I have someone coming to look at my old desk and monitor today. I need to find the hex key for it so he can dissasemble it if he decides to buy it. I should also give it a wash before he arrives.

I need to pick up a usb hub for the laptop so I can hook up the web cam that was on Katt’s machine. A wireless cam would be ideal now that we’re using the laptop for the cam, but I don’t want to put the money out for it just yet. I need to buy video editing software first.

–time edit–

The computer desk and montor are downstairs. I’ve taken down the shelves that used to eb above my old desk. I vaccumed the oriental rug, the entire floor area. I organized some more stuff. Now that the area is clear, I get to think about how to use the space! Maybe a double chair against the wall. Maybe a wardrobe. Maybe… So many options!

I sold Katt’s desktop! Yay! I put my computer on Katt’s desk in a little nook in our loft. After that I put an ad in craigslist for my monitor and desk. I am looking forward to having the extra space upstairs when they’re gone. It’ll clear up a huge whack of space that we can use for storage of some kind.

I spent a lot of time watching the Battlestar Galactica DVD I bought the other day. They film in here in Vancouver, and it was cool to see the Woodwards building a few blocks away from my place being used as a set. They also filmed in a lot of alleys in my area. It’s fun to see.

I bought a new kind of scotch yesterday. I’ll tell you the name of it when I remember. It’s glen something or other. It’s not quite as good as the Glen Dronach, but it’s definitely better than the Glen Morrangie. It’s a nice Amber colour, and it’s supposed to have undertones of lavendar, which I can’t taste, but it is certainly nice and smooth. It doesn’t have a smoky taste to it at all. I liked the Glen Dronach because it had a slight smoky peat flavour.

Enough of that. I have to clean upstairs a bit more before bed.
