Sledding. Especially if it’s on an inner tube.

I cleared out the basement completely today and brought all the old structures to the dump. My 8×10 utility trailer was completely filled to the brim with old shelving and wood that was unusable. Unfortunately, most of it had been painted so I couldn’t use it for the fireplace.
I picked up a wire brush that attaches to my drill that I can use to brush off the flaky paint on the walls. It shouldn’t take me more than a few hours to get the walls prepped tomorrow. Wednesday I will rent a concrete grinder so I can finish the floors.
So much fun.
CBC.ca Arts – Mother may take Harry Potter battle to court
Now really, aren’t there bigger battles to be fought in the world than trying to get Harry Potter books banned? You know, things like AIDS prevention, feeding and clothing the homeless, and something called tolerance.
Stories like this really get my ire up because they are just so petty and worthless. It typifies everything that is wrong with society, to me.
I’m not going to finish stripping the floor the way I’ve been doing it. It’s too much work for a not great result. Instead, I am going to get a concrete grinder to strip the paint off to the are concrete underneath. It will take me much less time and the floor will be nice, smooth, and flawless, when I am done.
Much better than sticky gross paint stripping goo.
On Monday I clear out both sides of the basement and sweep the floors. On Wednesday I grind the floors until they look hawt. Then, at some point before the new year, I will paint the walls and floors. Sweet.
That was painful.
I spent 4.5 hours on my freaking knees scraping bubbled paint off the floor. And that was only 1/2 the floor space. My knees hurt, and I’ve got blisters on my toes. My toes!
The top layer of paint has been removed nicely but there’s still an under layer of paint that seems to be washable with water. I’ll try to clean it off with a mop before I go at it with the paint stripping goo. Water is less expensive than goo.
I’m taking a break tomorrow. No stripping for me. I’ll get back to that on Thursday.
The basement floor is a real pain in the ass. I ended up having to buy paint stripper because the paint would not stop chipping. I decided it was better to strip the paint entirely. I’ve got about 1/3 of the basement covered in paint stripping goop that I will leave on for about 6 hours and then go at it with the floor scraper again. Hopefully it works well. With the floor entirely stripped of paint the new paint I will put on it will stick really well.
The floor just keeps getting more and more complicated and more and more expensive. Ah well. It will be worth it when it’s all done.
The second bedroom is now finished apart from painting the vent cover for the heating vent. I also put up the curtains today and the room is now ready to go.
I pulled the last of the ceiling tiles down today in the 1st part of the basement and I rewired one of the electrical outlets downstairs. I also started washing the floors down to prep for painting. It’s an absolutely evil job. Every time the floor gets wet the paint peels, and wherever the paint peels there is powder from long term moisture buildup that turns into a paste and it takes forever to clean. Tomorrow I have to go over the floor with the scraper again to remove the loose material that the mopping loosened up, then I will mop again. I’ll repeat the process until no more stuff comes off.
Then I wait 3 days for the floor to dry and paint the walls & floor.
During the 3 day break I will catch up on web work, organize the 2nd bedroom, and organize whatever else is organizable.
Yep.
Busy day today.
I wire brushed the concrete walls in the basement today. I just need to brush the floors, sweep up, and wash the walls with TSP and I can paint. Actually, I have to take the ceiling tiles down before I wash the walls.
After many attempts at brushing, I’m going to need to pick up a floor scraper tomorrow. The wire brush doesn’t take enough of the old paint off the floor. I’ve got all the paint I need, so I want to get it done ASAP. Tomorrow is another busy day. Munch in the AM, pick up floor scraper in the early afternoon, and then pick up firewood in the late afternoon. Then back to the basement.
I picked up out Christmas tree today! It’s all up and the lights have been out on. Unfortunately, I can’t find our box of decorations. They seem to have gotten lost in the move. It looks like we’ll need to go out and get some.
That is all.
I went to the gym for the second time in a week. It’s been almost a year since I worked out in the gym. My last serious workouts were in Nov 2005 when unfortunately I had to stop because my ankle got too bad to support myself while lifting and I couldn’t use the elliptical trainer anymore. I had surgery on my ankle on Jan 25, 2006 and I was supposed to avoid major impact for 6 months at the minimum. Then, of course, we started traveling, an traveling was not conducive to working out at all. Now that we’re in one place working out is easy as pie. The leisure centre is less than 10 minutes from home so it’s really convenient.
I did the elliptical trainer last night and a light leg workout. I wanted to see how well my repaired ankle functioned and it did really well. I was really worried that I would have lingering issues with the ankle that would affect my ability to exercise. Now I’m on a quest to get back my cardio and build my strength back up to a level I am happy with so I can get back to my real first love, martial arts.
In other news, I had the chimney cleaned and inspected today. I normally would have done the cleaning myself, but I wanted a ‘pro’ to come in and make sure it was safe to burn in it. It is indeed safe to use it, but come spring I will need to re mortar the brick chimney on the roof and put flue caps on the 3 flues. The mortar and bricks are breaking down and the joints have a lot of moss growing in them, so that is my good weather project. I will pick up the flue caps today and when the snow melts from the roof I’ll put those on. It’s a quick job, where the mortar is not, so it makes sense to take care of the flue caps sooner than later. The caps are cheap, too. Even better for cash strapped canines.
