Let’s see if I remember how to write more than 140 characters at a time.

I first started writing this blog in 1997.  For the first six years I manually posted to a self built blog. HTML coding FTW!  Those entries are on a hard drive somewhere.  This site started in 2003 and I wrote regularly until 2010 and more sporadically after that, until I finally stopped writing altogether in 2012.

So here I am, 5 years later.

Much has changed and much has not.

We moved in 2015 to a new house that accommodates our poly group better. Rather than sharing one kitchen we now have two separate suites; one upstairs and one downstairs.  The new (to us) house was renovated before we moved in, so there’s nothing we had to do other than pick paint colours and tighten some screws.

My best pug friend, Ignatius, died in August 2016.  That was probably the hardest death I’ve ever had to deal with.  It was harder than when my mother died.  You’d think it would be the other way around, but it wasn’t.  We still have moon pug girl.  She is 10 now and still as happy as a baked potato.

I wear reading glasses now.  At my advanced age my eyes no longer function as they are supposed to.  It’s taken a little getting used to and I still forget to bring my glasses with me most of the time.  I’m fine print’s bitch without glasses.

I discovered Japanese whiskey last year.  One of my favourite discoveries in the last few years, I have to say.  The Suntori TOKI is one of my favourites.

Cooking has become a more regular pastime.  Baking, too.  Smittenkitchen is one of my favourite places to get recipes from.  In a fit of nostalgia, I got my grandmother’s jelly mold salad recipe and made it for Christmas. It was a staple at family holidays growing up and it had been at least 15 years since I had it last.  I guess the aspic type salads are not very popular nowadays.  I’m the only one in the house that likes it.  More for me!

More and more frequently I’m beset by periods of intense nostaliga.  Most recently I heard that the house I grew up in is now a group home.  I made the mistake of checking out the photos of the redesign and my heart fell.  While I am very excited that the house is being used for such a wonderful purpose, I recognize nothing except a basic floor plan.  I think, for the most part, that the past is better left in the past.  It’s not possible to go back in time, and it’s better to keep your eyes on what’s ahead.

Speaking of what’s ahead, the kitten and I are going on an adventure in summer.  I’m pretty excited.  We’re going on a guided nature trip, followed by a few days rest in the middle of nowhere.  Nowhere sounds pretty exciting!  I don’t often take the time to really disconnect from the electronic miasma that is life.  It’ll be cool.

I’m not sure if I’ll be back to write again.  Maybe this is one of those nostalgic things better left in the past.

We’ll see.
